Different Types of Hypnotherapy: Tools for Transformation

Exploring the Hypnotherapy Toolbox

Hypnotherapy isn't a one-size-fits-all process—it’s a rich and adaptable practice grounded in both neuroscience and the deep wisdom of the subconscious mind. A skilled hypnotherapist works like a guide, selecting from a range of approaches based on what you need most.

Because going to a hypnotherapist isn't nearly as common as casual knowledge of hypnosis, many people don't actually know what we do in a hypnotherapy session. Yes, there is relaxation involved, and yes, there is exploration and communication with the subconscious mind. How exactly do we do that?

Here's an overview the the techniques that we use and you may experience when you go to a clinical hypnotherapy session.

Exploring the Hypnotherapy Toolbox: Different Types of Hypnotherapy Techniques

Suggestion Therapy
This is one of the foundational techniques in hypnotherapy. While you're in a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus, your hypnotherapist offers positive, future-oriented suggestions. These can help reshape inner narratives and support healthy habits, confidence, and behavioral change. Think of it as planting new seeds in the fertile soil of your subconscious.

In my practice, clients co-author the important statements that they want to take root in the subconscious mind, which is a key to the power of the statements themselves. They are not a cookie-cutter set of suggestions, but unique ideas and words that arise from the client themself, which are relevant and timely and potent for the change they seek.

Guided Relaxation
By using progressive muscle relaxation or soothing imagery, and even boring counting of numbers, this technique helps ease the body and calm the mind. Guided relaxation helps manage stress, anxiety, and sleep difficulties, and creates the conditions for inner healing. In this state, your nervous system shifts from "fight or flight" into parasympathetic, rest-and-restore mode.

Relaxation promotes communication with the sub-conscious mind more easily. Many clients report they find it easier to be calm and relaxed outside of hypnotherapy sessions once they learn how easy it is to practice the relaxation that I teach them.

Different Types of Hypnotherapy Techniques

Visualization
You’ve likely heard elite athletes visualize their success before a big event. Hypnotherapists use a similar principle to help you imagine achieving your goals while you are in hypnosis—whether it’s public speaking, overcoming a fear, or embracing wellness. Mental rehearsal is not just motivational; it’s backed by studies showing that muscles do fire from rehearsing a sprint or throwing a basketball, or giving a talk, or feeling good about oneself. Visualization is also used to draw on the power of the imagination for relaxation and resetting the nervous system.

The imagination is an extraordinary faculty that recruits the subconscious mind and therefore the body as well. And good news, you don't have to "see" to be good with visualization. Your imagination can be through feelings, knowing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and seeing images. Most of us have a combination of all of them. And, just for a test, when I say think of a bird singing, do you see it, hear it or sense it?

Regression Hypnotherapy
With care and consent, regression allows a person to revisit past experiences that may still be influencing current emotions or behaviors. This technique is not about reliving trauma, but about uncovering insights and reframing the past. It’s best used by well-trained practitioners and always with emotional safety as the priority. There are a variety of regression techniques that can be helpful depending on the challenges one wants to address. Clients may regress to early life, being in the womb, or go further back before that time to uncover the source of a problem and understand it. Once the understanding has surfaced, the client is better able to make different choices and program associated changes into their subconscious.

Choosing the Best Approach for You

Your initial consultation is where we begin to understand your goals, preferences, and history. i my practice I offer a thoughtful blend of techniques to address different aspects of your challenge. For stress management, we emphasize more relaxation and suggestion. For deeper healing, we begin with a clear goal and then use a variety of techniques for subsequent sessions that address the mental and emotional layers that are ready to be explored.

Hypnotherapy can be used for a wide array of situations.

One of the values of hypnotherapy is its versatility. Here are just a few examples of how different techniques can be applied:

  • Stress Relief & Sleep: Hypnotherapy supports your nervous system in shifting out of stress and into calm. With regular sessions, many people experience deeper rest, reduced tension, and a renewed sense of ease.

  • Quitting Smoking: Hypnosis helps reframe the mental and emotional patterns that drive smoking. It strengthens your inner commitment and gives you tools for managing cravings and staying free.

  • Weight & Body Image: Many people struggle with patterns tied to food, self-worth, or body shame. Hypnotherapy can help you rewrite those inner stories, creating a more compassionate and sustainable relationship with your body.

  • Pain Management: Hypnotherapy offers natural ways to reduce pain and increase comfort. It helps your mind and body work together to shift perception and relieve suffering.

  • Fear & Phobia Work: Whether it’s flying, public speaking, or something more private, hypnosis can help you reduce the emotional charge of fears and increase your sense of safety and control.

  • Confidence & Self-Worth: Low confidence often stems from outdated beliefs or internalized messages. Hypnosis can help you reconnect with your value, trust your voice, and show up with more authenticity.

  • Habit Shifting: From nail-biting to procrastination, habits often operate beneath conscious awareness. Hypnotherapy helps bring those patterns into the light and makes new, healthier choices feel more natural.

  • Birth Preparation: Hypnosis for birth helps reduce anxiety and pain while promoting calm and confidence. Many parents find it to be a powerful ally for both mind and body during labor and delivery.

  • Past Life Regression: For those drawn to explore beyond this lifetime, past life work can offer emotional insight and spiritual meaning. Some find it helps resolve long-standing inner patterns including some relationships.

The Relationship Matters
While technique is important, the real heart of hypnotherapy is the relationship between you and your practitioner. Safety, empathy, and trust create the ideal environment for your subconscious mind to engage, explore, and transform. Take your time in choosing a qualified practitioner who feels right to you. Interview a few individuals, ask questions, and trust your sense of who is a good match for you.

Can hypnotherapy help me?

Hypnotherapy can be helpful for a wide range of issues.  While I can't give specific advice here, many people have been helped by it! Conditions include stress management, pain relief, phobias, smoking cessation, weight loss, sleep disorders, and improving habits, preparing for medical procedures and improving self esteem.  If you have a specific concern, it's always best to consult with a qualified hypnotherapist to discuss its effectiveness for your situation.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed can vary depending on your individual goals and challenges.  Some issues may be addressed in a few sessions, while others may require more ongoing sessions.  Your hypnotherapist can discuss this with you during your consultation.

A typical hypnotherapy session will involve a conversation about your goals, followed by relaxation techniques to guide you into a relaxed state.  The hypnotherapist will then use various techniques (depending on your needs) to deliver positive suggestions aimed at promoting change.  You will always remain in control during the session and can easily come out of the relaxed state at any time.

Can I do Hypnotherapy online?

Yes, many of the techniques can be offered via an online digital platform. You'll need to have a quiet place to sit and relax, a computer with a camera and microphone (or headphones with mic), good lighting, and a steady internet signal. If your hypnotherapist offers online sessions, they can advise you of the requirements so you can be successful. I offer sessions online for people in the United States. Learn more here.
