What is Hypnotherapy?

Discover how hypnotherapy can help you break through inner roadblocks and create lasting change—naturally and effectively.

Have you ever noticed how some habits or thought patterns seem to dig in, no matter how much effort you put into changing them? It can feel like something beneath the surface is running the show. That “something” is exactly where hypnotherapy comes in.

Through hypnotherapy, you can access your inner mind—the part that quietly shapes your behaviors, beliefs, and emotional responses—and gently redirect it toward your goals. Whether you’re navigating persistent worry, stress, or patterns that no longer serve you, hypnotherapy offers a path to change that’s both empowering and deeply respectful of your inner wisdom.

Key Point at a Glance:
  • Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention, where your awareness becomes both heightened and narrowed.
  • Hypnotherapy uses this state to support wellness, personal growth, and even medical healing.
  • It helps you rewire inner patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that feel stuck at the conscious level.
  • Hypnotherapy is safe, effective, and uniquely tailored to your goals.

What is Hypnosis?

Despite the myths you may have seen in movies, hypnosis isn’t about losing control and being made to quack like a duck. It’s a natural state of awareness—similar to how you feel when you’re lost in a great book or on a walk where your thoughts drift peacefully. Your attention becomes both narrowed and heightened, and your inner mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions.

In this focused state, you remain awake and in charge. You can hear everything and choose how much to engage. A trained hypnotherapist guides you inward, helping you tap into the part of you that’s ready to create positive, lasting change.

Hypnotherapy uses this inner-focused state to shift the thought patterns and emotional associations that may be holding you back. You might think of it like resetting the internal script you’ve been living by—quietly and powerfully.

How does hypnotherapy help?

A session begins with a conversation about what you'd like to change or improve. I ask a number of questions to understand your goal and what's been getting in the way. We take time to get really clear on what you want.

From there, I guide you through calming and centering techniques to help your body relax first and then relax your mind so you can communicate with your subconscious mind.

Once you’re in this inner-focused state, I offer custom suggestions aligned with your goals—whether that’s feeling ease in certain situations, changing a long-standing habit, or discovering more peace in your day-to-day life. Because your subconscious mind is more receptive in this state, the suggestions often feel natural and easily integrated.

Real Success Story

One client came to me with a clear vision for his health. He had invested in high-quality exercise equipment for his home, had strong intentions to use it, and imagined himself becoming fitter and more energized. But year after year, he didn’t follow through. He told me it was like something invisible kept stopping him.

Together, we worked through the inner resistance—not by forcing willpower, but by gently shifting the subconscious patterns that kept him from showing up for himself. After just a few focused sessions, he began his new routine with ease and consistency. Most importantly, he didn’t overdo it. He respected his body’s pace, enjoyed his workouts, and stayed in tune with his stamina and health. The outcome? He felt stronger, healthier, and proud of what he’d achieved—because it finally aligned with who he knew he could be.

What Does Hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is remarkably versatile. It can support many aspects of your life, including:

  • Reducing stress and tension
  • Improving sleep
  • Supporting physical healing
  • Boosting confidence
  • Shifting stubborn habits
  • Increasing focus and motivation
  • Preparing for pregnancy, labor and childbirth.

Most of all, hypnotherapy helps you feel more aligned—more in tune with yourself, and more in charge of how you move through life. Because you access and energize your subconscious mind with instructions, you begin to think, act, and feel with those new instructions.

Is Hypnotherapy right for you?

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Hypnotherapy is for anyone who senses that something deeper is keeping them from the ease, success, or satisfaction they desire. If you’ve tried logic, habits, or other therapies and still feel blocked, this approach may help you access the subconscious programming that's been resistant to change.

Choosing a Qualified Hypnotherapist

It’s important to choose someone with not just experience, but integrity. Look for a practitioner who is certified by a respected organization—like the International Board of Hypnotherapy—and trained by a reputable school, such as the Hypnotherapy Academy of America®. These are the organizations with which I am affiliated. Ask about their approach and whether it aligns with your goals. Most will offer a consultation to see if it’s a good fit.

Common Questions:

Is hypnotherapy a real thing?
Yes. When practiced by a qualified professional, hypnotherapy is a safe, respectful, and effective process. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor acknowledges Hypnotherapists in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education approves Hypnotherapy training programs.

Will I be asleep or unaware?
No. You’ll be in a calm, focused state—but still aware, and always in control. Most people report feeling very relaxed and pleasantly focused on the words and images we use.

Can anyone benefit?
Most people can. Openness, curiosity, and a desire to grow are the best foundations. I approach my work with clients as an opportunity to teach the skills related to hypnosis, which you can use for many purposes in life.

How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your goals. Some clients experience profound shifts in just a few sessions, while others explore deeper work over time.

Is it covered by insurance?
Typically, it isn’t. Some health care plans may reimburse or authorize use of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) so ask your administrator.

Final Thoughts

Hypnotherapy isn’t about “fixing” you. It’s about helping the wisest, most capable part of you take the lead. It's a part we haven't given as much credit as is due, and through hypnosis, we access it more easily. If you’ve been spinning your wheels or repeating old patterns, this therapy can offer you a doorway into lasting transformation—one that respects your pace, your process, and your power.

You already carry the blueprint for change. Hypnotherapy helps you access it.
